4K earns its keep on a 55-inch screen or bigger for sport and films. On a phone, a tablet or a small telly, HD looks the same to the eye and uses a quarter of the data. It is live television sent at 3840 by 2160 pixels, four times the detail of 1080p, down an ordinary broadband line. Resolution is only half the story though: bitrate counts for just as much, which is why a properly carried 4K feed looks sharper than a squeezed one running at the very same resolution.
